Cannabis, marijuana, and hemp all contain cannabidiol, but how is it different?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the second most prevalent active ingredient in cannabis (marijuana). CBD is a constituent of medical marijuana, but it is derived directly from hemp, a close cousin of marijuana, or manufactured in a laboratory. Among the hundreds of constituents in marijuana, CBD does not cause a “high” by itself. An excerpt from a report published by the World Health Organization states, “In humans, CBD exhibits no signs of abuse or dependence. The use of pure CBD has not been linked to any public health problems.”

How can CBD be taken?

There are many forms of CBD, including oils, extracts, capsules, patches, vapes, and topical preparations. CBD-infused oils, lotions, creams, or bath bombs may be the best option if you want to reduce inflammation and relieve muscle and joint pain. CBD may also be absorbed directly into the bloodstream by way of a CBC patch or a tincture or spray placed under the tongue.

In countries outside the United States, Sativex, which contains CBD as an active ingredient, is approved for treating muscle spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis and for cancer pain. Epidiolex is approved for treating certain types of epilepsy and tuberous sclerosis in the United States.
